If you are not properly digesting and absorbing what you eat, you are not living your best life.
Digestive health is so much more than eating fiber or supplementing with probiotics. Stress, environment, emotions, and food all play a role in optimal digestion.
Did you know that digestion starts in the brain? When we see, smell, or even think about food our brain tells our gut to prep for digestion. If we are mindlessly eating our brain/body does not have time to initiate the digestive process. Slow down, sit down, smell your food, and stimulate your brain. #protip try massaging the area right behind your jaw before you eat- it will help trigger your vagus nerve and signal the brain/gut to start digestion!
In order for you to digest food your body needs to be in a parasympathetic state aka “rest and digest”. We live in a predominately high stress society and spend most of our time in a sympathetic state aka “fight or flight”. Our gut literally shuts down and stops moving food through our GI system when we are physically and/or emotionally stressed. That is why it is so important to find healthy ways to de-stress. Think yoga, meditation, or journaling. When it comes to food take a few deep breaths before you eat your meal. Chew slowly and focus on the food in front of you- not a phone or computer screen. #mindfuleating
Probiotics can be beneficial, after all our gut is filled with trillions of microorganisms, but should not be used as a bandaid to a bigger issue or as a cure all. Get these from real food sources (notice a trend here) like sauerkraut and kimchi. #protip while kombucha is a probiotic they can be loaded with tons of sugar so read your labels!
Eat real, whole, unprocessed foods. Find healthy ways to de-stress. Minimize sugar consumption. Hydrate. Prioritize sleep. Eat slowly and mindfully. Take care of your gut and it will take care of you!
