How to Nourish and Flourish While Traveling

Nutrition can be hard when traveling...fast food joints are everywhere and convenience can outweigh sticking to healthy foods. But not all hope is lost! 

Follow these healthy travel tips to nourish and flourish while traveling:

1. Pack some healthy snacks.

  • Carrots/Bell Peppers and single serve container of guacamole

  • Cucumbers and single serve container of hummus

  • Apples and cheese.

  • Apples and nut butters

  • Turkey/Beef Jerky

  • Best bar options include: Rx bars, Epic Bars, DNX Bars, Bulletproof bars

2. Hit up a grocery store when you arrive to load up on easy protein and veggies options.

  • Nitrate free deli meat, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, snap peas, plain greek yogurt, etc.

3. Move every day.

  • Brisk 20 min walk

  • Hotel WOD 

  • etc.

4. Drink lots and lots of water! 

5. Aim to eat a protein rich breakfast everyday!

  • Egg/Egg White Omelet with #alltheveggies (spinach, onions, bell peppers, asparagus, etc).

  • Yogurt with a cup of berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries).

  • Chicken/Turkey Sausage with eggs and veggies.

  • Summertime shakes with lots of greens, protein (yogurt/whey), and a smidgen of fruit

6. When eating out…

  • Prioritize protein and veggies.

  • Try to choose options that are "whole, real food from the earth/farm"

  • Look up restaurants menu before and choose what to order- that way you have a plan when eating out. Stick to your plan when ordering!

  • Don’t be afraid to be “that” person that asks for alternatives like dressing on the side etc. Just ask kindly.

7. Set alcohol and “treat” boundaries.

  • Set a limit of alcoholic beverages and/or treats and stick to it! Also ask yourself “Do I actually want <insert drink or treat>? Or is it because I feel inclined to have it in this moment/environment? Will this <insert drink or treat> make me feel guilty and screw up the rest of my day? Whatever your answer is, own your choice and move on.

8. And remember just because it’s a holiday weekend/vacation doesn’t mean we need to completely go off the rails on our nutrition. Enjoy things outside of food as you travel. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but always ask yourself “Will I be happy about this choice later?”.

What you put into your body is always a choice! Set your self up for nutritional success, plan ahead, be mindful, and enjoy your vacay!
